"I'm calling out
to thoughts
in smoke"

This is the first release by The Sunshine Coffins to feature lyrics
and vocals but the second release so far.

There is a story behind this song... let's go way, way back to 2014.

A not-finished, half-written song based on a Haiku was presented
to what was not really a band at that point to record a song for
reasons unknown.

For fun? Maybe.

Did it create arguments? Of course it did.

Were there fisticuffs? How could there not be?

Was there blood, fire and bruising? Sadly.... yes.

Was the demo tape nearly burned in the fire? Uh-huh.

Damaged? Yup.

Salvaged? Mostly.

To this day no one is really sure what the argument was
about. More than likely it was about who would play and what
the arrangements would be.

There was only a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar, some guitar solos, and vocals recorded. A fight happened and some of the yelling was captured at the beginning of the tape. That part was damaged when the tape was thrown at the face of the now long gone piano player. It
ricocheted off his forehead then into the roaring fire of an open
fireplace. Some fragments of the argument were used or recreated
(kinda) but not really decipherable.

Parts of the demo were salvaged, digitized and mixed
together with other instrumental fragments from other
unfinished projects.

Before anyone asks the predictable stupid question the answer
is no. The recorded sounds of fire were not the actual fire from
that day. Tapes don't work that way. But nice try.

So here we present the fragments of the original and a new
recording made in July/2017 to commemorate fights, hatred and
bad feelings. And some nasty burns as well.

"I remember playing the tape for them not expecting much enthusiasm
but they surprised me with their noodling over the demo playing through the speakers. It was calm until serious talk about recording it came up.

Then the fights began.

It's too bad because it had this neat psychedelic sound to it.
There was a Farfisa organ sound and some congas... but
sadly the moment is lost. The recreation is nice but sounds nothing
like what we had that day. I don't know what happened to the piano
player... nor do I even remember his name. Might be in prison for the
murder of a goldfish. But that's all speculation. Anyway... I hope this
completes the picture. I seem to be the only one that does interviews.
The other guys just turn into ghosts."

"They played me the tapes of what they salvaged... you
could smell the burnt tape when you heard it. It sounded
like it was saved from a fire. But what the hell do I know?
I'm just the janitor"
The Janitor

"Hey, get the f*ck outta here, Don't you have something
to mop?"
The rest of us

"Hey... wasn't Kris Kristofferson the janitor at a recording
studio once? Look how far he went..."
A lone member of the peanut gallery

"sometimes my mind was drawn
to a painter's brush
outlines of a mind
full of black smoke
he ran out of time
but the colors still call out"
